Souley Vegan

Out and about in Downtown Oakland before heading out to the bars - Legionnaires Saloon perhaps? Or trying to take a break from Mills College campus and grab a bite to eat? Souley Vegan is one of the hip-est up and coming restaurants, established in the summer of 2009, Souley Vegan serves delicious soul food for the vegan types! And of course, has a gender free restroom in the back! Feel free to try a fresh twist on historic soul food and don’t be afraid to dip in the back for the loo!

Unlike some of the other business owners who we have discussed, this stop on the tour visits a business owned by a low income black woman with a dream! Tamearra Dyson never received any grant or loan money in opening her dream restaurant, she worked many catering jobs for years with the assistance of her son. If the bad-ass owner hasn’t already convinced you that Souley Vegan is worth a visit, let’s take a peek at their menu.

In my humble opinion, the Sample Platter is to die for! And on your must try list while vising Souley Vegan! It includes: Greens, yams, black eye peas, potato salad, mac n cheesz, southern fried tofu, Lentils, BBQ tofu and Cornbread! After your starters, the next best options are the Okra Gumbo: Mix of pepper, corn, seaweed, tomato non gmo tofu, onion, garlic and spices…(spice level- Medium) and the Seitan “Chick “ n Waffles with house made Seitan and two waffles, vegan butter and syrup! Mmm!
