Temescal Tool Lending Library

The Temescal Tool Lending Library is located in the basement of the Temescal Branch of the Oakland Public Library. Its resources are available to any resident or property owner in Oakland, Emeryville, and Piedmont The Tool Lending Library was founded after the Oakland Hills firestorm in 1991. The Temescal branch of the public library founded a Home Resources collection to help community members rebuild following this disaster. The official Tool Lending Library was opened in 2000. It is an example of Oakland community members gathering together to share resources to rebuild the community. The Tool Lending Library has over 5,000 tools available to loan to the public, including resources for home remodeling, repairs, gardening, and landscaping. The guidelines for borrowing from the Tool Library are more restrictive than those for the Public Library: in order to borrow any tools you must register separately from the Public Library in order to verify your address. The Library also offers workshops based on the needs of the community members. The Tool Library has also partnered with local programs such as Rebuilding Together and Scenic Streets. While Rebuilding Together works to provide affordable homeownership to Oakland community members, Scenic Streets is a Rockridge-based organization focused more on beautifying Oakland’s environment than supporting community members. While the Tool Lending Library can provide support for homeowners in need, it is equally available to community members hoping to “clean up” Oakland’s streets.
